Finding Movement Wherever You Can: It’s More Fun Than You Think!
Today, I decided to take my own advice and get moving outside. I went for a long walk along the beach, enjoying the soothing sound of the waves and the fresh sea breeze. The sun was shining, and the fresh air felt so good—it made me realise just how important it is to find movement wherever you can. It doesn’t always have to be a structured workout or long gym session; everyday movement can do wonders for both your body and mind.
The Benefits of Sunshine and Fresh Air
Not only is getting out in nature a great way to get moving, but the benefits of sunshine and fresh air are well-documented. Sunshine helps your body produce vitamin D, which is essential for bone health, mood regulation, and immune function. Fresh air is also a natural mood booster, helping you feel more grounded and energised.
However, next time I might remember to bring sunscreen (because, let’s face it, we can all forget from time to time!), especially when enjoying a long walk outside. Don’t make my mistake—protect your skin!
Sneaky Ways to Get More Movement in Your Day
We all know how busy life can get, but there are plenty of ways to sneak in some movement throughout your day, even when you’re not at the gym.
Squats or Stretches While Waiting for the Kettle – Who says you can’t get a mini workout in while making your tea or coffee? Add a few squats or stretches during those few minutes—these ‘exercise snacks’ really add up over time!
Walk Up and Down the Stairs – Instead of going up just once, make it a challenge and take the stairs three times. This simple trick can get your heart rate up and works your legs!
Play with the Kids – Rather than just watching from the sidelines, get involved in active play! Whether it’s a game of tag, jumping on a trampoline, or even running around in the park, this is a great way to get your body moving while having fun.
Park Further Away – We’ve all been guilty of looking for the closest parking spot, but parking a little further can give you an extra opportunity to walk—every step counts.
Dance While Cleaning – Turn up your favourite tunes while doing housework and shake your hips as you dust, vacuum, or wipe down surfaces. It’s a great way to keep your body moving without even realising it!
Movement Should Be Fun!
At the heart of it all, my philosophy is this: health is all about finding movement that you enjoy. It’s not just about getting your body in shape—it’s about making movement something you love and look forward to. Whether it’s dancing in the kitchen or playing with the kids, finding ways to move your body should be something that brings you joy, not dread.
