Embracing Strength: My Journey with Scoliosis and Fitness

Hi there, I'm Frankie, the founder of Womstag Fitness, and I'd like to share my personal journey with you. It's a story of challenges, fears, and ultimately, triumph through the power of strength training.

As a teenager, I was diagnosed with scoliosis, a condition where the spine curves in unnatural ways.

It was a scary time for me emotionally because suddenly, I felt fragile and limited. I was told to be cautious, to avoid strenuous activities that could exacerbate my condition.

The thought of spinal surgery loomed like a dark cloud over my head, and I couldn't shake off the fear.

I was fortunate that my scoliosis was relatively minor, but it still affected my mindset for years. I was afraid of exercise, thinking that any movement could worsen my condition. This fear led me down a path of weight gain and self-doubt. I felt miserable in my own skin, trapped by my perceived limitations.

It wasn't until I hit rock bottom, feeling unhappy and unhealthy, that I decided to make a change. I summoned the courage to step into a gym, despite my anxiety and lack of confidence. Walking into that space felt like entering a foreign land—I was clueless about where to start, what exercises to do, and how to protect my back.

I was totally overwhelmed

That's when I made a pivotal decision—I hired a coach who understood my condition and had sound knowledge of human anatomy.

I explained my scoliosis, my fears, and my desire to get stronger without risking injury. Together, we embarked on a journey of strengthening and conditioning my core and back muscles, learning proper movement patterns, and gradually building up my strength.

It wasn't easy. There were moments of frustration and setbacks. But with each session, I grew more confident. I learned how to perform exercises like deadlifts and squats safely, understanding that movement was not my enemy but my ally in building resilience.

Over the years, I continued to work with different coaches, exploring various aspects of fitness—from competition lifts like bench press and barbell squats, to balance and coordination training, cardio workouts, and more. What I discovered was a newfound love for exercise and a profound realisation—movement was the key to alleviating my back pain, not avoiding it.

Contrary to what I believed in the past—that I should rest more to protect my back—I found that the more I moved, the stronger and less painful my back became. It was a transformative shift in mindset that empowered me to embrace my body's capabilities rather than dwell on its limitations.
